Sponsors and/or Investigators must request the approval of a competent Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee (whose main responsibility is the protection of the rights of the trial subjects), regarding the suitability of the trial. The precise constitution and legal status of an IRB or Ethics Committee varies between countries, but usually it is made up of members of the medical profession (not involved in the conduct of the trial) and lay persons.
